Shades of 2019 For New York Mets Faithful, But Don’t Despair

FLUSHING — “Oh no not again,” would have been the anguished cry from the diehard New York Mets faithful, but without anyone in the seats to boo, hiss or hurl whatever they could get their hands on, the only sigh came from the cutout cardboard fans which seem to sink lower into their seats as Marcell Ozuna rounded the bases with a game tying home run off of Edwin Díaz in the top of the ninth inning at an empty Citi Field.

While the blast by Ozuna wasn’t the end of the game, it did make Met fans who were listening or watching recall the 2019 season when Edwin Díaz gave up game tying or game losing home runs in the 9th inning with regularity. In fact, during the 2019 season Díaz gave up 15 home runs while blowing seven saves. This year was supposed to be different for Díaz and the diehard Mets fans, and the 2020 season did start out much differently with Díaz notching a save in the first game of the abbreviated season.

When new manager Luis Rojas brought his closer in during the second game of the season, thoughts of Díaz blown saves during the 2019 campaign had to be reverberating in the heads of the fans listening and watching at home. Díaz didn’t disappoint in this new abbreviated season by giving up a game tying home run to Ozuna with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.

However after escaping the top half of the ninth with a tie, the 2020 Mets were unable to get a run home in the bottom half of the inning leading to extra innings.

In the 10th inning, with a runner on second via the new extra inning rule, the Braves brought the runner home with a single by Dansby Swanson. This led to two more runs and a 5-2 Braves lead. In the bottom half of the 10th inning the Mets managed to get across 1 run but were unable to tie the game leading to an Atlanta Braves victory and a disappointing loss for the New York Mets.

While two games don’t make a season, this years Mets team is well stacked with players who could make an impact in the 2020 campaign. Players such as Pete Alonso, Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil, JD Davis, Robinson Canó, Brandon Nimmo, Amed Rosario, as well as Steven Matz and Jacob deGrom, form an excellent nucleus that could make this years 2020 Mets team special. Only time will tell, but hopefully new manager Rojas will make the right decisions, which will lead to a playoff berth in the new, revised 2020 playoff format.
